8 mm Green Cardamom: Complete Quality Buying Guide

Green cardamom is often sold by size, but millimetres alone do not decide quality. An 8 mm pod can look impressive and still disappoint if it is faded, over-dried, lightly filled or poorly stored. A good purchase decision combines appearance, aroma, internal seed condition, cleanliness and suitability for the intended use.

What does “8 mm” mean?

The measurement generally refers to pod size. Larger pods are popular in premium retail packs, gifting, hospitality and export markets because they create a strong visual impression. However, buyers should not assume that every large pod has the same flavour intensity. Growing conditions, harvest maturity, curing, storage and age all influence the final experience.

Commercial grades may also use terms such as premium, medium, fruit, split and reject. These are trade descriptions, not universal scientific standards. A buyer should therefore request a physical sample, recent photographs or an agreed written specification before placing a large order.

Six quality checks that matter

1. Colour

Freshly cured commercial cardamom is usually green, but natural colour varies. Extremely bright or perfectly uniform colour is not, by itself, proof of superior quality. Look for a reasonably consistent lot without excessive yellow, brown or bleached pods.

2. Aroma

Crush one pod and smell the seeds. The aroma should be clean, sweet, warm and characteristic, without mustiness, chemical odour or stale notes. Aroma is often more informative than the outside appearance.

3. Seed fill

Open several pods from different parts of the sample. Good pods should contain developed, aromatic seeds. Large but hollow pods give poor value, especially when cardamom is being purchased for grinding.

4. Moisture and texture

Pods should not feel damp, rubbery or mouldy. At the same time, an extremely brittle lot may have lost aroma through prolonged or unsuitable storage. Export and institutional buyers should agree on a tested moisture specification rather than relying only on touch.

5. Defects

Check the percentage of splits, open pods, immature pods, insect damage, foreign matter and discoloured material. Inspect more than the top layer of a bag or carton.

6. Traceability

Ask for the crop or packing period, batch details, origin, packaging format and available laboratory reports. Requirements differ by buyer and destination, so the certificate package should be agreed before shipment.

How to use 8 mm cardamom

Use whole pods in biryani, pulao, tea, payasam and slow-cooked gravies. Lightly crush pods immediately before cooking to release aroma. For powder, remove seeds and grind only the quantity needed; prolonged storage of ground cardamom accelerates flavour loss. Bakeries, sweet makers and beverage manufacturers should test a sample in their actual recipe before approving a bulk lot.

Storage advice

Keep cardamom airtight, cool, dry and away from sunlight and strong-smelling products. Do not refrigerate an opened bag unless condensation can be prevented. For wholesale stock, use clean food-grade inner liners, follow first-in-first-out rotation and record opening dates.

FAQs

Is 8 mm cardamom always stronger than 7 mm cardamom?

No. Size affects appearance and market grade, while flavour also depends on seed fill, curing, freshness and storage.

Why do cardamom prices change frequently?

Supply, auction arrivals, grade mix, weather, demand and trading conditions can all influence prices.

Should I buy whole pods or powder?

Whole pods generally retain aroma longer. Powder is convenient when it is freshly packed and stored airtight.
